How to Cook Chicken Breasts for Chicken Recipes

Our family eats lots of homemade recipes which have cooked shredded chicken breasts as one of their main ingredients. Chicken breasts are full of lean protein. I typically shred my own chicken breast rather than use rotisserie chicken or frozen cooked chicken. I would rather use freshly shredded chicken in my homemade recipes.  I typically use my crockpot to cook the chicken breasts or chicken tenders. It’s easy, healthier, cheaper and also tastier!

How to Poach Chicken

In a Pot

To poach boneless, skinless chicken breasts, place them in a large pot or skillet and add 1-2 cups of water or reduced sodium chicken broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and cook for 9-14 minutes until chicken reaches 160 degrees F. about 15 minutes.

In the Oven

You can poach in the oven. Place chicken in a single layer in a roasting pan. You can add lemon slices, peppercorns, or any other spices or herbs. Bring 4 cups of water or chicken broth to a boil and immediately pour over chicken. Cover and bake at 400 degrees F for 20-35 minutes, checking for an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

In a Crockpot

You can also poach chicken breasts in the crockpot. Place frozen chicken breasts or chicken tenders in a crockpot. Cover with reduced sodium chicken broth. Cook on high for 3 hours or until tender. Using chicken broth makes the chicken breasts tastier.

Use poached for chicken burritos, tacos, chicken salad, etc.
